Bouvard on Trump's Mimetic Provocation and Measurement

By Dennis Bouvard

Plain text

Trump is tiger-attacking-man posting.

I guess we know where he would stand on the question of whether the tiger should have been killed.

@slooperbia50068 None whatsoever.

@slooperbia50068 I don’t care about the guy with the tiger and what difference would it make if I did?

@slooperbia50068 When it comes to Trump, though, my overriding response is almost always amazement. Against what would I be measuring him?

@slooperbia50068 If you consdier someone "bad" do you not have someone "good" to measure them against, if you consider someone "petty" do you not have someone "generous" to measure them against, etc.? In short, are not all adjectives relative, distinguishing along a gradient?

@slooperbia50068 Not for me. If I see Trump tiger-attacks-man posting I assume he has his reasons and go with it. What am I going to do? Express outrage at his trivialization of this tragic event? He sees something in it, and that's worth noticing.

@slooperbia50068 I’m interested in what Trump sees something in—I’m not measuring him against animal snuff film fans.

@slooperbia50068 He is sublime

@slooperbia50068 I don't know about "mystical," but Trump is sublime, not beautiful.

@slooperbia50068 Yes, the "meaning" of Trump can never be contained solely "within" Trump. But he's an irreplaceable sign--nobody else could organize these particular resentments and devotions.
