Freedom

used in 183 texts across the archive

Freedom is whatever you can do within and with the rules. Rules emerge in any space where violence has been sufficiently deferred so that it can be kept out of mind, and they are as thick (exclusive and prescriptive) as they need to be in order to keep it out of mind.

In use

The notion that equality and freedom are competing values is false to the core.

The elemental form of freedom is that of the discipline: a shared, inviolate and inexhaustible locus of attention.

If the choice between freedom and coercion is thus treated as a matter of expediency, freedom is bound to be sacrificed in almost every instance.
