Colm Gillis

I've been remiss in not mentioning this guy before. I never see anyone else refer to him, but he's written quite a few books by now and he does strong scholarly work within a power-realist frame that is also aware of the importance of ideas in history.

Those introductions are hard to get right--they're inherently awkward. He's a Chemistry PhD and autodidact in political theory, so he is a bit literal minded but very dogged in tracing ideas to their roots.
