Girardian reading of antifa
The Democrats have always been the party of the outsiders (not exactly the "lows," but I suppose various high-low coalitions)--slaveowners, then Southern whites, along with ethnic immigrants in the north and then, finally, the blacks and all the other "marginalized." The Republicans have always been the party of the normies, or middle--middle class WASPs, settlers of the West, etc. That's why the Democrat coalitions are always unstable--what do slaveowners or the agrarian ruling class in the South have in common in Irish, Italian and Jewish immigrants? Or blacks with gays, for that matter? Among the highs, I think finance has generally leaned D and manufacturing R.

I'm also not sure how all this fits with the "Puritan hypothesis" and the whole Massachusetts vs. Virginia model--I haven't thought too much about that.
