Bouvard on ADA's Entrenched Cultural Consensus

Dennis Bouvard · X / Twitter · Oct 07, 2026 · 1 min read

No one ever argues for the repeal of the Americans with Disabilities Act even though it may be as consequential and destructive as any other piece of civil rights legislation.

@eventidia I wouldn't give it a high priority either but it's interesting that it never gets raised, even by the "based." Maybe this is one Boomer innovation the Zoomers like.

@SiobhanShamwow @eventidia If it's very difficult to resist, or to renounce the opportunity to use it at some later point, which helps account for how entrenched it's become. It's the only form of anti-discrimination that can include anyone.

@truepeers Not only housing but all buildings have required upgrades--in that way it serves a similar purpose as environmental legislation. I think it's still left-coded but somehow inoffensively so. It's equally available to whites and men, for one thing.

@SiobhanShamwow @eventidia Of course there are real disabilities but the consequences of incentivizing claims to disability and the creation of new categories of disability are obvious.

@SiobhanShamwow @eventidia Any university insturctor receiving accommodation notifications regarding students knows how true that is.

@truepeers I suppose in the end everything serves banking interests most of all. I don't think banks are either left or right but they do benefit from "volatility" which the left is better at providing.
